JONI SAID

On Women Singer/Songwriters

“Tracy Chapman wrote a coupla good songs, but generally speaking she’s not that musically gifted. And Suzanne Vega, well . . . And now there are dozens of them. But I don’t hear much there, frankly. When it comes to knowing where to put the chords, how to tell a story and how to build to a chorus, most of them can’t touch me.”

—to Robert Sandall, Sunday Times (London), September 9, 1990

JONI SAID

On Femininity

“[Dylan] was talking about how he didn’t like seeing women onstage, how he hates to see them up there whoring themselves. So he was asked, ‘Well, what about Joni Mitchell?’ And he says something like ‘She’s not really a woman. Joni’s kind of like a man.’ [Laughs] The thing is, I came into the business quite feminine. But nobody has had so many battles to wage as me. I had to stand up for my own artistic rights. And it’s probably good for my art ultimately.”
